These organizations and projects have been a crucial part of Macedonia’s war prevention process over the past decades, working in areas such as peacekeeping, police reform, human rights, and economic development.

State-Based Missions and Projects

European Union Mission to Macedonia (works on preparing Macedonia for accession to the EU)

European Union, EUPOL “Proxima” policing unit (focused on monitoring, advising, and bringing Macedonian policing up to international standards, 2003 – 2005)

NATO Skopje (conducted disarmament, peacekeeping, and ongoing military reform and training in Macedonia.

Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, Spillover Monitor Mission to Skopje launched in 1992 to help prevent the spread of the conflict to Macedonia.

United Nations Development Program FYR Macedonia works on areas of sustainable development, environmental protection, public education, and sponsored the 2003 weapons amnesty.

United Nations Preventive Deployment Force (UNPREDEP), the UN’s first-ever and only-to-date preventive peacekeeping force, 1992 – 1999.

USAID Macedonia has funded and directed projects around economic growth, rule of law, and education.

Non-Governmental Organizations and Projects

CIVIL Macedonia, a local Macedonian organization founded in 2001 by activist, Xhabir Deralla. Its multi-ethnic staff has launched several successful media and arts campaigns designed to encourage disarmament and stigmatize war and violence.

Open Society Institute – Macedonia works on civil society development, internal integration of Macedonia, and Macedonia’s EU accession process.

Search for Common Ground has been working in Macedonia since 1994 to strengthen interethnic relations and prevent violence

Southeast European University (SEEU) is the first multi-ethnic, multi-lingual university in the region. Started at the insistence of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities, Max van der Stoel, with contributions from USAID, Switzerland, and private donors.
